Earth Day!

April 22, 2008 / by lvaldez

Many of us do not really take the time to think about the condition in which our planet is in.  Until recently, we became aware that our planet is in great danger of being destroyed by us humans.  Every April 22nd we celebrate the day of the Earth.  Earth Day first came about in 1969 when the peace activist John McConnell began the tradition each year on the March equinox.  A second Earth Day was then founded by politician Gaylord Nelson which we celebrate on this day.

On September 1969, U.S. Senator Nelson announced at a conference in Seattle, Washington that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on the environment.  Senator Nelson conceived the idea of a national Earth Day after he visited Santa Barbara, CA where he saw an oil spill off of the coast in 1969.  The senator was outraged about the incident and that was when he conceived the idea and from there he went to Washington where a bill was designed and passed to make today, April 22nd a national day to celebrate our mother Earth.

Here at Chico State University our campus is very environmentally concerned so students from different organizations set up booths to inform their fellow school mates about our environment and what we all can do to better it.  The organization EARC, which is composed of local businesses, will be selling vegetarian cuisine to raise awareness on healthy environmentally friendly food and to raise funds for EARC in the Free Speech Area today.

Every year Chico State holds an Annual Earth Day recycling contest where various organizations sign up to recycle aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles, cardboard and newspaper, for over a month and a half.  At the end of the contest all of the money is totaled and distributed to the top three organizations which recycled the most.  It is a great way for organizations to promote recycling and earn some money as well.

On this day we should really consider the issues which we are dealing with involving our earth’s environment and do something about it.  Recycling and walking or riding our bikes instead of driving vehicles are things we can all do that will have a great impact on the condition that out planet will be in in years to come.
